Equity and Inclusive Education

Over the years the face of the contemporary classroom continues to undergo significant changes. Academics ranging with different psychological, emotional and educational needs will continue to be integrated into the classroom. Additionally, classroom teachers will work with a variety of academics with a diverse range of backgrounds increasing their likelihood of requiring extra guidance and/or assistance. Canada prides itself on being a multilingual,  foreign based population with newcomers being introduced and offered a better, more prosperous  live every day.   As a result of the increased growth of culturally diverse populations, schools will continue to be populated with a large range of individuals varying with different, and unique linguistic and socio-culture needs.  As a contemporary educator I recognize the importance of establishing a safe, welcoming supportive learning environment for all learners.  Educators traditional perspectives and practises will continue to undergo modifications in order to better satisfy the learning needs of all individuals. The social studies curriculum focuses on developing student awareness and knowledge of past and present societies in order to become more  effective citizens. The curriculum focuses heavily on deconstructing Canadian history  by looking at the cultural traditions, movements and practises that have transformed Canadian society.  Although this information may be beneficial for many, what happens when academics, such as the First Nations, Metis and Inuit, do not hold the same value system are forced to learn and adapt traditional beliefs. The forcing of the more Westernized, Canadian perspective on Aboriginal students undoubtedly marginalizes and oppresses their cultural practises and beliefs, denying these academics their rights and freedoms. By including various perspectives and expanding individual mindset students from different cultures will no longer be subjected to a loss of educational  rights and freedoms. The video OESSTA Culturally Responsive Pedagogy Video highlights the importance and benefits which follow when educators include various cultural practises and beliefs in classroom study. Instead of hold a very singular, mindset educators must encourage the incorporation of different cultural practises in order to “recognize and appreciate the individuals in your class.”  By sharing the stories and voices of different cultures academics sense of value is significantly heightened the speaker claims through inclusive education “the kids in my class really felt valued as they see themselves represented.” As an educator it is important that the infusion of equity ad inclusive education into the social studies curriculum is continually enforced in order to offer a more nurturing, supportive learning environment for all. When educators inspire student interest their likelihood to develop academically greatly heightens.
Inclusivity within classroom activities becomes the most integral practise which educators can pursue in order to enhance academics experience within the classroom. Establishing a supporting, nurturing learning environment which encourages equal learning opportunities for all not only heightens a students sense of belonging but also  aids in their overall educational development. An educators willingness to alter their perspective and scope of knowledge in regards to inclusive education contributes significantly to the success of their academics. When educators are willing to expand their horizons the learning opportunity for students significantly heightens.

The conversations pursued within our classroom discussion this week generated an emotional response from myself as the realization of contemporary issues were addressed. All academics, no matter of status, gender, ability and race, deserve equal learning opportunities. As an educator I recognize the significant role I play in feeding individual’s mind therefore I must be willing to continually heighten my perspective.

Inclusivity depends heavily on educators ability to ignore”traditional” practises and/or methods of instruction and instead be willing to encourage the investigation of various cultures. For academics to thrive it is important that focus is not based on one sole cultural perspective. Instead through the expansion of knowledge on different viewpoints academics understanding of self and society significantly heightens academics opportunity to develop. Additionally, educators must always take into consideration the financial situation of academics.  All individuals have different stories which have shaped their physical, emotional and psychological development. When educators keep in mind the barriers which academics may encounter their willingness to help them will increase.
