Inquiry based learning has gained significant popularity over the years as it debunks “traditional” practises and techniques of instruction to make room for more hands on, engaged learning. This method of instruction begins by posing a question, issue and/or imagined scenario for academics, then challenging them to think critically to produce a solution and/or opinion. Inquiry based learning engages academics method of thinking allowing for greater creativity and expansion. The evolution of technology has significantly contributed to the transformation of traditional practises and strategies of instruction. Student knowledge is gained and retained very differently due to the outlets made available. Student knowledge is gained and retained very differently due to the outlets made available.
The inquiry based learning as a method of instruction has gained in rapid popularity. This practise of instruction better educates as well prepares students for academic development and prosperity. Inquiry based learning educates learners on how to successfully collect, synthesize, and analyze information in order to better understand various social, economic and global issues. Additionally, this strategy of learning promotes the utilization of integration of technology to better communicate thoughts and knowledge. Traditional methods of instruction, such as memorization and specific assigned tasks, no longer challenges critical thought decreasing individuals ability to become effective academics. When educators develop engaging activities they allow students to develop their collaboration skill level which will be utilized within their academic journeys.
In this Ted Talk the speaker, Russ Fisher-Ives presents a compelling, thought provoking discussion exploring the benefits which follow from challenging individual thought through inquiry based instruction. Russ Fisher speaks of the importance of incorporating challenging, activities within a classroom as it allows students to better demonstrate their skills and knowledge.
Project and inquiry based learning enables students to develop and gage effective questioning, problem solving, and reasoning skills, which are necessary within all strands of education. When a connection between classroom activities and contemporary societal issues is created academics passion and knowledge significantly increases. Inquiry based learning begins with educators developing thought provoking questions in order to engage background knowledge. Once students have an idea for inquiry academics are permitted and encouraged to utilize various methods of technology to access various resources in order to “answer” the question of inquiry. During my practicum placement I had the opportunity to lead students in an inquiry based project and it was fascinating to observe the increased level of interest which students felt in comparison to more “traditional” activities. Students were challenged to create their own question for inquiry and were challenged to solve by researching different outlets and applying prior thought. Students were not only engaged in their learning, but proud to present the development of their knowledge.
As a twenty first century educator I recognize the benefits which follow from incorporating inquiry based method of instruction within a lesson. Students are not only increasing their academic knowledge but developing their collaboration, problem, inquiring skills. Educators must be willing to continually update their skill level and practises in order to satisfy the academic needs of all learners.
