The development of effective, intriguing curriculum based lesson plans and activities is essential to gage student interest. Contemporary learners are no longer satisfied with traditional methods of instruction therefore educators must be willing to incorporate inquiry based learning, technology, social media to heighten academic success. Additionally, educators must create realistic activities to demonstrate the validity of what and why they are learning about a particular area of study.
For the assigned innovative lesson plan review my colleagues and I were asked find a lesson online combating a unit of study within the social studies curriculum. Once examined we were instructed to deconstructed the components and give reason as to why or why not the activity models an innovative lesson. Reviewing an already completed activity from an educators perspective significantly increased my understanding of what constitutes an innovative lesson. I discovered many lessons, which although great content wise, lacked the element of thought provoking creativity. Academics respond greater when their level of understanding is challenged. Activities cannot focus solely on producing singular "products" instead educators should encourage students to expand their realm of knowledge.
My Innovative Lesson Plan Review examined an activity geared towards a fourth grade lesson which allowed students the exploration of human impact on the physical environment. The activity incorporates the inquiry based method of instruction as academics are creating a question which they answer through independent research. I thoroughly enjoyed this activity as not only does it appear appealing but it allows students the opportunity to participate in a filed study. The completion of this activity significantly increased my understanding of my role as an educator when developing lesson plans to foster student interest. Through the exploration of different activities I am better able to recognize the difference between effective lessons in order to improve my own. Additionally this assignment demonstrated the importance of educators having the want to expand their knowledge and realm of thinking. One of the most valuable lessons I have learned through out this journey thus far is that in order to succeed educators must become life long learners. When teachers take the time to recognize what constitutes effective instruction they are better able to feed| the minds of their academics.
